September Printmaking

The Online Art Group’s new sessions with printmaker Simon Ripley kicked off in September – beginning with a lovely, informal, introductory session where Simon talked us through the many variations of printmaking. He showed examples of the effects that can be produced, as well as giving hints and tips for what we may be able to achieve at home with basic materials and equipment.

We then dived straight in for the second session with a jam packed hour learning techniques for drawing with monoprinting. This was such an exciting and inspirational session, and the technique itself – with a mixture of controlled and uncontrolled outcomes – really lent itself to being a way to further explore some of the drawing techniques we developed in our sessions with Sara Dudman.

As printmaking is such a process led technique, and Simon shares a LOT of information in each session, we’ve really discovered how helpful it is to be able to pause live streams, or watch the recorded sessions back when you’re ready to work along – really making the sessions work for everyone.

I’ve been really frustrating myself with trying to paint landscape (can’t get away from the grand idea I’ve got in my head) and this looks liberating – not knowing what’s going on under the print surface has got to be a good thing for letting go! Group member
