Shapes in Nature

We are delighted to welcome artist Gary Mills back to the Online Art Group! For the first two sessions we’ve been experimenting with the idea of doodling – how this can help unlock those creative blocks we all have from time to time, and how to reconnect to accessible, mindful creativity, no matter what materials you happen to have at hand.

We started by identifying interesting and graphic shapes in nature and exploring these through playful line work, gestural paint techniques and layering to create quick, simple and effective studies from the world around us. The focus of the first session was to really focus on the simplicity of each step – from the shapes of the flora and fauna, to the quick and easy application of line and colour, helping to reduce what might initially seem like complicated forms into simple, achievable and fun steps.

We continued to draw inspiration from the world at our fingertips in our second session where we looked at the humble pebble. So many of us have collected stones and mementos from beaches, trips and adventures, and Gary guided us through a quick and effective technique to explore the shapes and surfaces of these beautiful objects.

Forthcoming artist sessions:
