For our final two experimental at-home printmaking sessions with Gemma Dunnell over in the Online Art Group, we pared things back to really hone in on accessible new ways of capturing and making line, tone and shadow.

We began by trying wipe-away mono printing. A fun and loose method that challenges our level of control, using cloths, white spirit, and paintbrushes to create an image. Inspired by the dreamy textures of Degas, who also favoured this technique, we began creating our own moody and ethereal landscapes.

We stayed immersed in our beautiful natural worlds for our final session, inking up and printing directly from plants, leaves and flowers. Although simple in it’s process the amount of detail and clarity that each print captured was so exciting, and meant that each print felt really individual – full of the personality of the subject.

All of us here at the Online Art Group – staff and group members – have loved every minute of having Gemma with us since November; not only sharing so many new skills and techniques but never failing to bring her never-ending joyful sense of play and enthusiasm for the creative world to each session – thank you Gemma!
