Winter Sketchbooking

We’ve begun our wonderful winter sketchbooking adventure with the brilliant Gemma Dunnell over in the Somerset Art Works Online Art Group.

Starting from scratch, we began carefully and methodically creating our own books, all completely unique depending on our choices of paper and size, finished off with some simple binding stitches. Within one short hour we all had beautiful handmade books we couldn’t wait to begin filling!

For the second session we then jumped headfirst into Gemma’s wonderful, fun, playful and oftentimes surreal introduction to collage. Put simply, collage is the process of cutting and layering existing images to create something new and unexpected. Gemma took us through lots of incredible examples, from very specific compositions all the way through to more loose and experimental ideas. The absolute joy of collage is that nothing is off the table, anything you have on hand can be used, and the results are so often unexpected, exciting and even funny!

Gemma talked us through some basic ideas around layering and composition, with examples from her own work as well as other artists creations, showing us all how one small change can bring your composition to life – and the braver your choices the more exciting the results. What better way to lose yourself for an hour or two simply playing and having fun?

Forthcoming dates with Gemma:
