Celebrating Creativity on World Mental Health Day

The 10th October 2024 is World Mental Health Day and we invite you to take a moment to celebrate the transformative power of creativity!

We began the Somerset Art Works Online Art Group back in early 2022. In the wake of the pandemic we became acutely aware of how a truly accessible online space was needed, where people with all levels of creative experience or none, could gather together without the pressures of expectations or outcomes, to engage with the incredible benefits of simple creativity.

Now, almost three years on, we are so proud to have developed a truly safe space, where almost 120 members can access a wealth of creative learning and sharing from a truly diverse range of artist facilitators. The core aim of this group is to provide the space and opportunity to support the wellbeing of our participants through the genuinely transformative power of creativity.

“It’s become a really important part of both my creative and emotional life – the group is a real anchor to hold on to when things aren’t going so well.” – Group Participant

“I don’t think I can fully vocalise just how invaluable the Online Art Group has been for me. It has helped keep me afloat both creatively and on a mental health level.” – Group Participant

Over the past few weeks with our current facilitating artist, Gary Mills, we’ve been exploring different textile techniques we can try at home.

Since the inception of the Online Art Group, our longest standing source of inspiration and solace has been nature. Whether recreating vistas and landscapes, or our creativity encouraging us to head out and engage with the changing seasons on our doorstep. And Gary’s sessions have been no different, exploring new ways bring the Landscape into our creative practices through tactile making and play; building up layered fabric scenes with paint, stitch, appliqué and collage.

Both nature and creativity enhance wellbeing by reducing stress, improving mood, and promoting mindfulness through self-expression and connection, fostering a sense of accomplishment and community, helping individuals find balance, resilience and joy!
