Page and Pigment

Through July we have continued our journey of natural textures, pigments, land and seascapes at the SAW Online Art Group.

After spending our first sessions becoming familiar with new materials and techniques, recent sessions with artist Sally Wetherall have really encouraged us to combine and translate these onto larger scale sheets to create bolder land and seascapes.

Though exciting and experimental, Sally’s techniques have been really accessible. All of the materials are easily sourced from the home or landscape, including egg tempera, earth pigments, printing plates made from tetra pak cartons, oil resist, direct plant printing, masking tape resist and collage.

All of our experimental previous works were then collated together as we were introduced to four different book forms, using different collation and binding techniques. Ranging from fairly traditional sewn forms to more experimental, messy and sculptural pieces. Sally encouraged us to approach each process with personal creativity, to identify the relationships between existing marks, shapes and colours and to make otherwise functional choices into intentional and creative gestures. A beautiful way to collate all of the ideas, techniques and outcomes from the last two months of sessions. Thank you so much to Sally for guiding us through this exciting new way of working.

‘Each book is such a lovely record of time and place! I can’t wait to try making my own! ‘ – OAG participant

Online Art Group member, artist Anna Baker, shared this lovely reel on her Facebook page, inspired by Sally’s workshops: https://www.facebook.com/reel/854870366502902

And just to mention…. if you go to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2024 look out for Sally’s work, Carol from SAW tells us it has an excellent placement!
