Near and Far

For our final two sessions with the brilliant Alison Jacobs, our attention was turned to an array of iconic scenes.

Starting closer to home with views of the Glastonbury Tor, we began by understanding how to capture and render the landscape in simple pen and wash before moving onto a larger scale full painting in layered water colours, brush pens and inks. Whilst method and material was as important as ever, the real focus of this session was understanding how our choices in composition, focal point and viewpoint can make all the difference!

And for our grand finale we looked at the incredible work of JMW Turner, and how he pushed landscape painting into abstraction. Recreating one of Turners iconic, expressive sunsets to mark the end of the day and the end of this 4-week block of classes, we used fun and experimental washes of acrylic, gouache and watercolour.  Plus there was a bonus surprise inspired by recent sightings of the Northern Lights in Somerset.

Thank you so much to Alison for this hugely enjoyable past two months. In just four sessions the group has been introduced to so many fun, and accessible new techniques, as well as placing those new skills within the context of other artists, and art history.

Our new artist for June and July will be announced very soon, watch this space…
